Speedwell (Veronica Repens): Did you already know this spectacular ground clover plant? Many gardeners are familiar with the tall-growing Veronicas, but often they are not so familiar with this creeping Veronica ground cover. It grows easily from Speedwell seeds and is commonly referred to as Creeping Speedwell. It is really a low growing ground cover that only reaches a height of 1 – 2 inches. In spring and early summer, Veronica Repens Creeping Speedwell is adorned with masses of soft, pale blue flowers. This ground cover will spread and bloom in your flower bed or work perfectly between stepping stones or in a rock garden. Veronica Repens ground cover is considered an alpine plant and can perform at elevations up to 7,500 feet. It tolerates light foot traffic and deer will usually avoid the small plants.
How to Grow Veronica Speedwell: Sow Speedwell seeds indoors 8 – 10 weeks before planting them outdoors. Using a peaty starter mix, lightly sow the Creeping Speedwell seeds on the surface of the mix and gently press the seed into the mix. Light is needed for germination and keep the ground cover seed consistently moist. Creeping Speedwell ground covers can also be sown directly outside after the frost season. Make a weed-free seedbed in a sheltered spot, sow the seed on the surface and keep it moist. Creeping Speedwell is a very easy to care for ground cover.
